Every mother is concerned about their child’s well being; part and parcel of that often seems like constantly worrying about whether their baby is being properly fed.
It’s a concern that begins as soon as the baby is born, and one of the most common focal points is breast milk… specifically, how to produce more breast milk for their child?
There are a lot of urban myths and legends circulating about this subject.
Some people say that eating particular foods will increase milk production, but there’s no scientific evidence supporting this idea.
However, there are some ways which do work to encourage and stimulate milk production. Here are our top three.
1. Be sure you are using the right procedure for nursing.
Simply using the wrong technique for breastfeeding can restrict the milk flow and in turn reduce breast milk production rather than the desired effect to boost breast milk production.
Keep in mind — your baby has to be properly positioned so it can properly attach to your breast.
If your baby is not attaching well, then he or she is probably in an uncomfortable or at least sub-optimal position.
To make sure you have the right alignment, look up videos on YouTube and the Internet which show you the right way to do it – I shall be doing a post about this eventually.
2. Increase your calorie intake and drink fluid — lots of fluid.
While there’s no evidence an exotic diet will help boost breast milk production, there is one thing you can do: stay nourished and hydrated!
This is particularly important while breastfeeding, since breastfeeding means you will lose more energy and fluid than is normal.
To keep your body healthy, you should increase the amount of water you drink by at least an additional two to three glasses of water each day.
Also, keep in mind you’ll have to raise your calorie intake also.
Having an additional snack or healthy meal throughout the day is an easy way to do it.
Going on a diet in order to get rid of the baby weight you put on in pregnancy, on the other hand, is a tempting idea but a mistake: dieting while breastfeeding can seriously impact both the quantity and quality of your breast milk. Instead, to lose weight following childbirth, focus on doing it with regular exercise and eating healthy types of food… not crash diets or starvation.
3. Buy a breast pump.
Many mothers have medical conditions which make producing breast milk a struggle.
Simply experiencing pain during the expression of milk can make it hard to breastfeed a child.
For these cases, a breast milk pump can provide much-needed additional help. These devices attach to the chest, mimicking a child’s suckling action.
A breast pump lets you express milk whenever it’s convenient, then store the milk in the refrigerator or freezer to use later – see our post about the rules for storing breast milk.
You can get pumps both in baby stores and online – again, this will be another post where you can check out the Top 10 of Breast Milk Pumps.
Electric models tend to be fairly expensive, but you can get manual pumps for under $100 (£70).
Either way, keep in mind that a baby needs about 25 ounces worth of breast milk each day. Though the quantity might vary depending on the baby’s age and size, ensuring your child gets enough is imperative.
4. Try a Boost Breast Milk Enhancer Supplement
Nowadays there seems to be a supplement available for anything that you think needs supplementing !! and Boosting Breast Milk is no exception!
There are a variety on the market, which includes one we (or my friend) has reviewed – Boost Breast Milk Enhancer Review .
I am personally all for trying such things – do they really work? it would appear they do but how much of this is down to psychology? the fact that you are trying something & therefore the anxiety you feel is likely to drop – never under estimate the impact of anxiety or stress and how you body works or in fact the power of taking action! (I sound like Tony Robbins now!) and how that can have a positive effect on you and your body.
So try a supplement & who cares about ‘who’ is getting the boost breast milk results – you or the supplement – you are getting the results!
